REVIEW: Moroccan Oil

Moroccan Oil seems to be THE hair product must have at the moment. Bloggers and youtubers alike have been raving about how soft and silky their hair feels after using this product. It provides long-term moisturization without the product-buildup. I purchased this myself in July at an authorized dealer (hair salon), and at almost $17 CAD for 25 mL of product. It better be working miracles!

So does Moroccan Oil live up to the hype? That would be a NO, and here's why.

A.) When you first open the bottle and smell the product, it smells like they've put a lot of fragance in their, so immediately you know it isn't as natural as one may think.
B.) Upon further inspection to the ingredient listing, the actual oil (Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil) is listed third, which means it isn't pure argan oil.
In fact, here are first 5 ingredients listed on the bottle:
  • Cyclomethicone
  • Dimethicone
  • Argania spinosa kernel oil
  • Parfum (fragrance)
  • Linum Usitatissimum (linseed) seed extract
As you can see, the first 2 ingredients are actually 2 different types of silicone found in hair products, makeup, sunscreen, etc. As far as I know, dimethicone helps maintain the smoothness and creaminess to the overall product. It is also what adds shine to your hair (as it reflects light) and makes your hair dryer faster, as some claim, since it repels water. On the more negative side, many people do find that silicones irritate their skin. Also, do keep in mind that silicones do build up in your hair as well.

For such an expensive product with average results, I would rather choose something else more affordable. If I am mainly putting silicone in my hair, then I might as well just spend $6 ot $7 on the same thing with more product rather than this.
Does it make my hair feel soft? Yes. Does it feel more moisturized? Sort of. I think what makes people think Moroccan Oil is so amazing is actually more the magic of silicone and less of the actual oil. Just saying.

Bottom line: would I repurchase? Flat out no. Don't fall into the hype.
